The perfect hiking and camping course for young kids.

We spend the first 3 days camped in a Sioux-style teepee on KMAC's own 10-acre site adjoining Rocky Mountain National Park. We'll cook our own meals, learn to read a map and compass, take a six-mile hike up an 11,000-foot peak, rock climb on top-rope and learn group cohesion through "the Spiders Web" and other games.

We'll also visit the historic Enos Mills cabin and talk about ecology with a park ranger from Rocky Mountain National Park.

Next we put our new skills to use, heading into the Indian Peaks Wilderness for a four-day camping adventure. We'll walk through stands of aspen and pine, gradually rising above the tree line into the stark beauty of the mountains. We'll hike up the peaks, keeping our eyes peeled for bighorn sheep. We'll make camp, stargaze, tell stories and share our thoughts about all we've seen and done.

During the backpacking segment of this course students carry 15 to 20 pound packs and hike about two to three miles a day. Activities are carefully chosen to challenge and build confidence in pre-teens.
